Q.1 How did your journey in photography start?

Ans. It truly started when I was in college. I had the opportunity to learn darkroom and I fell in love with the magic of developing prints. Of course, back in the film days, it was hours between the shot and the developed image. So seeing the negative become a print was truly a magical (and sometimes, anxious) experience.

Q.2 How would you describe your style of photography?

Ans. Short answer, eclectic! Lighting, patterns, texture all inspire my work. I love shooting architecture, landscapes & still life as well, which I incorporate into my nude art. That’s the beauty of composite work in that it allows a total range of creating!

Q.3 What do you think are the challenges in shooting nude photography?

Ans. For me it all centers on the model. Establishing trust with the model is key!   Lighting and pose are critical to creating art.  Otherwise it’s just a snapshot of a naked woman.  Building a relationship with the model is also crucial.

With composite work the model is typically posing against a neutral background.  There are few props and little for her to play off of other than the concept.  Of course suitable locations are also a challenge which is what encouraged my composite work.

Q.4 What would be your 5 tips for someone just starting out in nude photography?

  • Study photographers whose work you admire. Examine how they light and pose their models.
  • Pay attention to light. It’s everywhere; hard, soft, direct, indirect. Play with it.
  • Have a concept in mind before you click the shutter be it bodyscapes, figure study, boudoir, etc.
  • Develop a critical eye. I see so many images of beautiful women ruined because of backgrounds distractions and distracting shadows.
  • Be willing to experiment.

Q.5 Which photographer’s work do you look up to the most?

Ans. So, so many… but to name a few…

  • Cartier Bresson:  he had such an incredible talent for capturing “a moment”
  • Irving Penn:  he brought fine art into portraiture
  • Ansel Adams: he was both artist & technician with his work
  • Thomas Holms:  amazing figure studies & light control
  • Brooke Shaden:  stunning composite art & storytelling

Q.6 Tell us about your favorite shoot you ever did. Why is it your favorite?

Ans. We were shooting on location in a river. The light was gorgeous. The location was beautiful & secluded. I asked the model to simply embrace the water…be aware of the feel of it. Well, that was all that was needed. She became one with the water and with very little direction from me, we got some stunning images.

Q.7 What can we find in your camera bag for a regular nude photography shoot?

Ans. Nikon D-600, Sigma 24-105mm lens, flashpoint AD300 flash.

Q.8 How do you select your models?

Ans. Primarily I select art models who have a wide range of experience in genres and posing.  I want the shoot to be more collaborative.  From my experience, modeling is much like a dance.  When the posing flows naturally the images are far more relaxed & appealing.

Q.9 Three of your top nude posing tips every photographer should know?

  1. Help your model to understand your concept first & be relaxed. I prefer to let the model bring her own expression to the shoot while allowing for direction as we shoot.
  2. Pay attention to the background. Is it distracting or enhancing the pose?
  3. Respect your model!!! Make sure the model is comfortable, emotionally & physically with the location & concept. Yes, a nude in the snow is visually appealing but frostbite isn’t! She’s there to help you create art NOTHING more.
