Q.1 Flying drones and capturing cinematic shots sounds incredibly exciting! Can you share a specific moment or project that ignited your passion for aerial photography and videography?

Ans. Back in 2010, I was a videographer and was at a point in my life where I was not satisfied. I actually almost quit video altogether.  I was soul-searching and came across these guys called the Copter Kids.

They flew RC helicopters with cameras on it and I was honestly blown away by the amazing cinematic shots they could get.  I grew up with RC cars, and I thought, wow, if I could marry remote controls heli and a camera that would be incredible.

I then saved up and bought my first drone, which I had to build from from a kit. It was stressful but it flew!  From then it’s been an absolutely amazing drone photography journey!

Q.2 With 20 years in film and cinematography, how did your background in traditional filmmaking contribute to your skills as a remote-controlled drone photographer?

Ans. It was a key factor in my ability to get the perfect shots that the director or client wanted. With that background, I can understand what looks good and make the client happy.

Q.3 Working with a diverse range of clients, including major brands like Mercedes, McDonald’s, and Sony, what challenges and opportunities come with creating aerial photos for such renowned companies?

Ans. The larger shoots are pretty interesting.  You will usually show up on set at 5 a.m. and then just sit around until you are called upon.  But you’ve got to be ready to rock at a moment’s notice and not miss a beat.

This can be challenging and stressful, as sometimes you have multiple elements moving across the screen, so timing is crucial. Also, sometimes you only have a few minutes to get the shot, just as the light is perfect.

So it definitely is stressful, but when you nail the shot and the client is ecstatic, then it makes it all worth it!

Q.4 How do you approach capturing cinematic shots with drones? Are there specific techniques or creative elements you prioritize to achieve that cinematic quality?

Ans. The key to cinematic shots is drone movement. You want to move the drone as many axes as possible while following the subject; this makes the shot more dynamic, fluid, and pleasing to the eye.

real estate drone photography

Ans. At the beginning, it was large drones and large cameras. As the years go by, the drones get smaller, and the camera quality gets smaller and better. So I think that trend will continue.

Q.6 Given the rapid advancement of drone technology, how do you stay updated on the latest equipment and techniques to ensure your work remains cutting-edge?

Ans. I only upgrade my gear as the clients request it. I don’t see a reason to upgrade if it’s not being asked for. For example, if you only shoot professional real estate photos, then you don’t need the latest and greatest gear for real estate drone photography.

But if the client needs RAW or PRORES footage, then you will need to upgrade to meet the expectation.

Q.7 Can you share a behind-the-scenes moment or a story from one of your drone photoshoot that stands out in your memory?

Ans. The moment that stands out the most is filming in Ireland for an IMAX film. We filmed on Skellig Michael Island with a large drone and a Camera.

We are the only crew ever allowed to film on the island with a drone. The only other film crew was a helicopter crew for Star Wars. (It’s the Luke Skywalker island in the film.)

It was pretty intense; there were multiple wildlife government agencies watching as we flew, making sure we didn’t hit any birds. Skellig Michael This is by far the most memorable place I’ve filmed in my career.

Ans. I like to look to social media to get ideas from other pilots of locations or specific camera movements as inspiration.

Q.9 What do you like to do other than photography?

Ans. I have six kids, and we recently moved to a farm property. We are working on making it off-grid and self-sufficient.
