Lets Uncover The Captivating Journey Of Pam Fields

Pam fields-An Erotic and Boudoir photographer

Q1. You started your photography journey later in life. What inspired you to make such a bold shift?

Ans. When I started my photography journey, I was 45. I think that timing was divinely inspired. I had left my career to homeschool my kids. When my daughter was a teen, she did a little modeling after I shared pictures I took with my point and shoot cameras. Being in the studio seeing these photographers work, I was drawn to the craft and the creativity. I initially started learning photography with the idea of one day supplementing our family’s income. I had no clue that it would lead me to supporting myself when I was 51.

As I was learning, I explored various genres of photography, mostly fashion portraits and conceptual portraits. I fell in love with studio lighting and very early on, I also was drawn to the intimate and sensual nature of boudoir and art nude photography. That is when I truly had a shift in my focus as I had a deep craving for more connection—with myself, with others, and with the stories we all carry. I didn’t just want to take pretty pictures. I wanted to help people see themselves again. Or maybe for the first time.

Q2. How do you approach working with clients who may feel vulnerable or self-conscious during intimate shoots?

Ans. Vulnerability is always part of an intimate session, and honestly, that’s where the magic starts.

When someone steps in front of my lens, they’re not just showing skin—they’re showing stories, insecurities, dreams, scars, desires. I don’t take that lightly. My first priority is always creating a space where they feel safe, seen, and absolutely un-judged. We talk. We laugh. Sometimes we cry. And through it all, I remind them: You are a work of art.

Here’s how I guide them through that:

  • Consent and communication are everything. From our first chat to the final shot, I tune in. We talk about what feels good, what doesn’t, what boundaries exist, and what moments they want to explore.
  • It’s a collaboration, not a performance. I don’t pose clients according to a laid out workflow with a set of “top 10 best selling poses”. I observe their movement and guide them with prompts that feel natural, empowering, sometimes playful, sometimes still. We follow the energy of the moment, not a list.
  • I don’t leave them guessing. Whether it’s a whispered “Oh my god, you look amazing” or showing a sneak peek of a breathtaking image, I make sure to let them know how great the session is going.
  • We talk openly. We talk about our imperfections: stretch marks, soft bellies, nervous laughter—all of it belongs. I remind them their body is not before or after. It’s a now. And that now is worthy of being celebrated. I share my own struggles.

Q3. Can you walk us through your creative process when planning a shoot, from the initial concept to the final image?

Ans. Every shoot I plan is based on my clients vision and purpose for their session. Planning starts with a questionnaire which guides clients through a set of questions for them to explore what they want from their experience. It’s a dance of intuition, aesthetics, and emotion.

It’s much more than asking “what do you want to wear?”  Sessions often become fluid as clients begin to express themselves. I allow space for them to have room for spontaneity because creating art rarely sticks to a script.

If it’s a couple, I build in prompts that stir intimacy—touch, breath, shared whispers. We make space for their chemistry to come alive.

Q4. What’s something about you that would surprise others?

Ans. Something that surprises people? Well, when I play two truths and a lie, people usually guess the wrong one! The choices are that I worked in a bank during an armed robbery, I was the lead singer in an indie band, or I lived in the woods for 1 year without electricity and running water. The lie is that I was never in a band! Yeah, those other two are totally true!

Here’s the other thing, people see the bold, sensual energy I bring to my sessions and assume I’ve always been like this, but no, I didn’t start my healing journey until I was almost 50! I That is what gives me the ability to hold space for others, real space, vulnerable space.

Q5. What’s your favorite lighting technique for capturing sensuality and softness?

Ans. I am usually a one-light photographer. I have additional lights to use when needed, but the 1 light in a gridded strip box is my go to when I’m on location. In my studio, I tend to use a big gridded octabox. I love how you can feather the light to sculpt the body with shadow. I usually place my light to the side or closer to 45 degrees and then I move around the light and subjects for a variety of lighting styles. Lighting is everything when it comes to capturing sensuality. It’s not just technical; it’s emotional.

Q6. What are some common misconceptions about erotic and boudoir photography that you’ve encountered, and how do you address them?

Ans. Oh, well, being that I work with clients creating erotic art and my clients are nude and often in some very intimate moments, if I had a dollar for every time someone misunderstood what I do and don’t do….one misconception is on what my boundaries may be. I am very clear on my website and contract that I only participate in sessions as a photographer.

Another big misconception is that my clients are on OnlyFans when in fact, my couples are private individuals and the sessions are just for them. Many people hear that I’m an erotic art photographer and they think it’s the same as pornography. There’s a difference between expression and objectification.

My work is rooted in intimacy, not performance. It’s art. I address this misconception through education. I discuss the difference in tone, style, and approach as well as talk about the end user. And when people see the images—they get it. It’s raw, yes. Sensual, yes. But it’s also art.

Q7. How has motherhood influenced your work and artistic perspective?

Ans. This is an interesting question. Motherhood prepared me and shaped my work in many ways I never expected. It deepened my capacity for empathy and presence. It also, as my children are now adults, took me to a place where I could really look at societal norms and taboos and learn for myself what sensuality, beauty, and sexual wellness is.

While raising my children, we were not closed off on talking with them about these topics but as they got older, it was many of their insights that taught me. Motherhood can be consuming. You give and give and often you lose your identity of self along the way.

So many of my clients are mothers who’ve forgotten what it feels like to take up space just for themselves. My work gives them that step back on the path to self-return.

Q8. Do you want to explore any new projects or directions in your photography?

Ans. My creative heart is a little restless and very curious, so there’s always something stirring beneath the surface. One project I’m planning is to create a Fine Art Erotic coffee table book showcasing my work. This will be a curated collection of client stories and images, especially from people over 40, post-divorce, post-kids, post-whatever society told them was their expiration date for desire. This one’s about liberation, late blooms, and falling in love with yourself again.

I’ll be diving into my notebook of themes and ideas more as I have clients who want to dive into the more creative side of blending eroticism with conceptual art.

Another area where my photography will go later in this year is where intimacy coaching will be offered to couples that are wanting to go deeper. Think sensual movement prompts, shared breath, and intentional eye contact. Not just posing couples, but guiding them into intimacy. Imagine a session that feels like foreplay and therapy and art, all at once. And finally, I will be showing the emotion behind the lens, not just the final image. Short, intimate films of sessions. Clients speaking their truths. The laughter, the nerves, the soft gasps when they see themselves fully. That’s where the heart of my work lives, and I want to share it.

Q9. If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be and why?

Ans. Well, just three? If I had to choose, here’s what I’d say:

Sensual – Not just in the erotic sense (though, yes), but in how I experience the world. I’m such a Pisces Sun with Venus that I feel things so deeply. I notice energy and vibrations. I’m drawn to touch, deep conversations, and the way light falls on collarbones. Sensuality is the heartbeat of everything I create.

Empathic – I feel people. I hold space for them. Whether someone’s showing up with confidence or trembling nerves, I tune in and mirror back their beauty, truth, and power. That emotional intuition guides every session, every pose, every edit.

Unapologetic – I’ve lived enough life to stop shrinking. I say the thing, I live authentically and I believe in pleasure, in art, in being a little too much. I’ve learned that softness and strength can dance together and I don’t need permission to be myself.

Q10. You’ve spoken at conferences like Shutterfest. What do you love about mentoring other photographers?

Ans. Shutterfest, education groups, workshops, and mentoring sessions, it’s those connections with fellow photographers that light me up in a way that’s hard to describe especially because what I am teaching isn’t really out there as much for traditional boudoir photographers that are venturing into working with couples and men and/or erotic are. There’s a moment I love and that’s the shift when a photographer stops trying to mimic what they’ve seen others do and starts asking, what do I want to say with my images? That’s when their work gets soul. I love guiding them into that clarity, helping them peel back the layers to find their voice so they can truly step into their own creative power.

My teaching spaces are not hype-squad zones or comparison traps. I believe in community over competition, transparency over ego and I’m not just saying that. There’s room for all of us—and I’m obsessed with helping others step into their gifts without shame or scarcity. I don’t teach fluff or hold back information to protect my “secrets.” I teach the technical side, lighting, posing, workflow, but what I really teach is liberation. Along with structure and process, I offer permission and presence with clients. Building relationships and truly knowing yourself and your client is at the heart of my work. After all, if you don’t know who your client is, how can you truly connect with them?

Q11. What daily rituals or habits fuel your creativity and self-care?

Ans. Creativity for me comes in almost constant waves for me as long as I’m feed it. I even use watercolor in my meditation setting aside time each morning, before I hop on emails or look at calendars, to breath in the day and think about what I am grateful for.

I take a little time to have my coffee and document any thoughts or ideas I want to come back to later. In the evening, part of my bedtime ritual is much the same. I will often pull oracle cards to gain insight and it’s less about prediction and more about intention. What am I calling in? What am I releasing?

Self-care is a big focus for me, whether it’s a brief sensual stretch on the floor, dancing in the kitchen, or walking barefoot outside. Taking time for massages, especially after a long day of shooting, is another way I unwind and recharge.

I make sensuality a regular practice with soft fabrics, candles, bath bombs, and fresh sheets. They remind me that pleasure and presence are always available. In all of this, my creativity thrives when I do. And my best work comes from being deeply connected to my body, my truth, and my boundaries.

Additionally, pay attention to composition, framing, and angles to create visually striking and balanced images.

Q12. What advice would you give photographers who want to transition into boudoir or fine art but are hesitant?

Ans. Many photographers find themselves at a place where they are drawn toward boudoir or fine art nude but they are nervous on taking that step. I encourage them to start with asking what it is about this niche that is calling to them. The first place to start is defining their “Why”. It’s important to be crystal clear on what you want.

You also need to understand your views and boundaries as well as your biases and/or any unresolved trauma and understand the impact these could have on your clients. Another thing I encourage is for photographers to think through their brand once they know who their target market and ideal client is.

Do they want to only work with women? What about couples and men? The branding and messaging is something that needs to resonate with your clients and should come from a place of authenticity. Finally, I encourage them to invest in quality education and portfolio building opportunities including understanding business and marketing practices.

Q13. Looking ahead, how do you envision the future of boudoir photography?

Ans. It’s my hope that more photographers will open up to working with men and couples in boudoir. I believe we will see more cliches and gimmicks, but there is a shift happening where there is a craving for something more real and authentic that truly leads people to the essence of who they are. Boudoir is often in a pretty narrow box. The future is body-liberated, gender-fluid, age-celebrating, and inclusive. I see us moving beyond “arched back and pouty lips” glammed up sessions and into a more raw, bold, and emotive expression where photographers don’t just direct posing but we guide and build a truly emotional and soul connecting experience.

I expect to see even more blending of genres with images that blur the line between boudoir and art nude and fashion. Clients will come not just for pretty photos, but for transformation, to share their story, to share who they are becoming—after divorce, after transition, after babies, after burnout. And yes, boudoir is going deeper. More photographers (like me) are bringing in personal coaching, intimacy work, and sensual embodiment practices. It’s becoming a tool for healing trauma, reclaiming desire, and exploring identity. It’s less “do this for your partner” and more do this for your soul.

Q14. Are there any current or upcoming projects you are working on that you are excited to share?

I’ve got a few things coming up including working on education content for photographers as well as publishing a coffee table book. I’m expanding more of my sessions outside of Las Vegas and working with select clients on destination sessions.

Q15. Lastly, What legacy do you hope to leave within the photography community and beyond?

I want it to be one of liberation, intimacy, and unapologetic truth.  I hope that people will remember me as a woman who showed the power of resilience and determination. I also hope that people remember me as the woman who worked to create a space for men and couples to be included in boudoir and as a leader in working with clients as opposed to models in creating  erotic art, creating a unique niche in the photography industry.

As an educator, I hope others will remember me as someone who truly loved teaching and sharing knowledge so that other photographers could do what they love and, if they want to, make a sustainable living from their craft while still leading from their heart. I want to be remembered as the educator that had no secrets and taught no fluff, as someone that wants other photographers to feel alive as they expand themselves and step into the essence of who they are and work from a place of authenticity and not industry gimmicks and cliches. I want to be the mentor who reminds others that success doesn’t have to mean burnout, comparison, or playing it safe. And, I want to be remember for helping other learn to create spaces where consent, ethics, and pleasure coexist with creativity and artistry.

Beyond the photography world, I want the people I’ve photographed—every single one—to look back and say, “That was the moment I came home to myself.” That their session was more than a shoot—it was a reclamation.  If I leave behind a trail of people—clients, creatives, couples—who feel more seen, whole, and desired because of something I helped them discover in themselves? That’s my legacy.

And honestly? That’s more than enough. That’s everything.
