Want to Capture Portraits that Feel Authentic? Learn these Environmental Portraiture Techniques

These B&H lectures on Youtube are incredibly useful. They’re free and full of great information. I mean what more could you ask for? I’ve linked to some others in the past, and I wanted to share this one today. This video is hosted by portrait photographer David Handschuh, a big-time believer in environmental portraiture.

What’s an environmental portrait? Well, simply, it’s a portrait that illuminates the subject in her or his natural environment. They usually avoid highly-posed tones, costume, or lighting. Instead, these portraits seek to capture the person as they are, where they are, and how they are, normally. These images require research and, as Handschuh stresses, a great deal of interacting. In this video, you’ll learn some of his favorite techniques to get it done.

Enjoy!
